Feierabend: understanding boundaries after work
Why end-of-day boundaries matter in Germany and how to clarify availability without making assumptions.
Feierabend means more than the moment work ends. It carries the sense that the working day is finished and personal time begins.
Do not infer a rule from one colleague
Some teams message late; others strongly protect evenings. Ask your manager what genuinely requires an out-of-hours response, how emergencies are signalled and whether scheduled sending is preferred.
Make your own boundary legible
Use calendar status, handover notes and realistic deadlines. Before leave, identify what can wait and who covers what cannot. Clear preparation makes disconnection easier for everyone.
Watch power differences
A manager may describe a late message as optional while junior colleagues experience pressure to answer. Teams should discuss this openly and set a norm that does not depend on guessing.
